I already own Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream At Home, and it's not like I make ice cream so often that I need multiple books on the topic. So when I saw Ample Hills Creamery, I immediately dismissed it as unnecessary. Then I went back to take a second look. And a third. By that time I was hooked and I ordered it. I got it last week and have already made Gather Round the Campfire, which is basically s'mores ice cream, and Salted Crack Caramel. Both were amazing. The Gather Round the Campfire is a cream base, into which you roast marshmallows and then scoop the molten stickiness into the cream and process with a blender. Then a graham cracker crumb cookie is made and broken up into the machine while it's churning. Finally, a milk chocolate ribbon is whipped through the churned cream. I used every mixing spoon in the house and had to stop halfway to run a load in the dishwasher, but it was so worth it. -BSB
Come for the ice cream recipes -- but stay for all of the hints and tricks sprinkled throughout! This is one of my favorite ice cream stores in the country (sadly in bankruptcy proceedings right now) - and I couldn't bear the thought of never having another taste of some of their classic flavors, so I sprung for the book. Best cookbook choice I could have made -- with nothing but some milk, cream, sugar and a old ice cream maker, we've been turning out perfect quarts of amazing tasting ice cream that puts all of the local ice cream stores to shame. Our own concoctions are as good as what you could get in their store -- a true testament to the well thought out, tested and created recipes that give you lots of room to learn the keys to good ice cream and improvise accordingly. Highly recommended! -E. Brown
I've given 5 stars because of the wonderful photographs however, if I had seen this book in a book store I would not have bought. This is without a doubt a book for the American market as most of the ingredients if available here would be expensive. Recipes are certainly different with beer, whiskey and other very strange icecreams eg, bacon. I had bought this book as a gift but it does not fulfill that need. Beautiful book but unfortunately I don't like it. -Elena
