'Syrian cooking merits a high spot in our culinary information and Itab and Dina, with their splendid plans and interesting stories, are the ideal creators to do this' Ruth Rogers

'Far beyond a cookbook' Evening Standard

'I offer this to everybody as a present... what's more, it's consistently an all out hit. The plans are anything but difficult to follow, delightfully introduced and ideal for anybody quick to try different things with very stylish Middle Eastern flavors.' Harriet Addison, The Times

Syria has consistently been the commercial center for the most heavenly fixings from East and West, a gathering point for explorers and brokers, where flavors and pleasantness impact. Nothing joins together and motivates Syrians as much as food. Indeed, even now, in conceivably the nation's breaking point, Syrian families in minuscule pads from Beirut to Berlin are looking out the best tomatoes, lemons, pomegranates and parsley to reproduce the flavor of home.

Companions and energetic cooks Itab and Dina compromised with Syrian ladies East and Europe to gather together the absolute best plans from one of the world's most noteworthy food societies. They went through months cooking with them, learning their plans and tuning in to accounts of home. From hot yogurt soup with turmeric to cherry meatballs, this is a flavorful festival of the one of a kind taste, culture and food of Syria - and a festival of everything that food and memory can intend to a person, to a family and to a country.

About the Author
Itab Azzam was born in Swaida, Syria, and lived in Damascus until 2011, when she moved to the UK. A filmmaker and theatre producer, she was part of the team behind BBC Four's SYRIAN SC HOOL and the multi award winning BAFTA nominated BBC Two Documentary Series Exodus: Our journey to Europe (RTS, Broadcast and Liberty). In 2013, she produced the award-winning film QUEENS OF SYRIA and followed it up in 2014 with ANTIGONE OF SYRIA, a theatre project bringing together Syrian women in Lebanon in a reimagining of Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy.

Dina Mousawi began a career in the arts at the age of ten. Her extensive work in theatre has taken her on both national and international tours across Europe, America and the Middle East. After working in Beirut on ANTIGONE OF SYRIA in 2014, she produced and directed TERRESTRIAL JOURNEYS, with Syrian women living in Beirut's refugee camps. Dina grew up in Baghdad, surrounded by the food of her Iraqi family where her passion for food began. Before joining world renowned theatre company Complicite, Dina baked at Mouse & De Lotz, her sister's cafe, and cooked at Park Road Kitchen, her brother's rotisserie and deli.

As a fairly novice cook I wasn't sure if I'd be good enough for this book - but I needn't have worried, it's EXCELLENT! Easy to follow recipes, beautiful photos and inspiring stories to boot. I wanted some unusual recipes for a dinner party, and at the end every plate was clean with not a morsel left over - so that's the best review a cookbook can have in my opinion!!! The book also got passed around the table as everyone was intrigued by the food! Brill. Love it.-Pitwilliams
This is a terrific book. I bought the kindle addition and am considering buying the hard copy I like it so much. The recipes are authentic, and as such tend to involve fairly short lists of ingredients - a nice balance to some of the interpretations of middle eastern recipes by western chefs, which often involve extra (and some would say unnecessary) embellishments. However, this does not mean they are lacking in flavour or interest. Thought has also been given to how easy ingredients are to source outside the region, with suggestions for alternatives where appropriate. There is a strong emphasis on mezze and lunch recipes, the majority of which are vegetarian. There are some intriguing baking recipes too - I'm looking forward to trying the turmeric cake and the carrot and coconut balls - as well as a section on jams and pickles. I found the stories that go alongside the recipes to be genuinely moving - giving a real sense of the impact of the Syrian conflict on the lives of ordinary people.-TrixC
I love this book. It's full of simple tasty recipes, many of which are accompanied by an interesting narrative and suggestions for adapting the recipe with alternative ingredients. I previously bought Cook For Syria which, although very worthy, is full of more complex "haute" Levant style recipes. This, on the other hand, is exactly what it says on the cover: authentic, achievable home style cooking. Lots of vegetarian / vegan recipes if like us you are trying to cut down on meat and increase the number of plant based meals. You are never far from an upbeat anecdote nonetheless reminding you of the plight of the Syrian people, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Well with the money on all fronts.-MsF
