Smorgasbord: The Art of Swedish Breads and Savory Treats |
JOHANNA KINDVALL is a Swedish illustrator who divides her time between a Brooklyn brownstone and her summer cottage in South Sweden. Her work has been featured in various books and online magazines, and she writes an illustrated food blog, Kokblog, which was named a Saveur "Site We Love." She is the illustrator and coauthor of Fika: The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break.
I absolutely love this cookbook and the illustrations that accompany it. The way the book is set up really allows you to build your smörgåsbord from the bottom up and by the end of it you have enough recipes to make almost everything you put on your table to be home made. From mayonaise, to pickling your own beets, butter, to the bread, to to curing your own ham: it really has everything. The explanations and recommendations are also great. I also appreciate the instructions included for each recipe about how to store the food and how long it will stay fresh! My only trepidation is that it is very meat heavy. If you don't eat meat or fish, then you can only use probably 40 to 50% of the recipes. That being said, I still love it and would recommend it in a heartbeat!-Elise
I just started baking sourdough bread and have a great fortune get Johanna Kindvall's this new book on Swedish breads and savory treats. I made this rustic rye bread from her book and it is the best bread I have ever tasted. Her instructions are clear and even though it does take time to bake this bread, it does not take a lot of actual work to produce this result. This is my first ever sourdough bread, and you just need to follow all her step by step instructions and a day when you will be home most of the day. A great weekend project and you have an amazing bread all week. I cannot wait to try her other breads and savory treats from this book. If this recipe is any indication, I am in for a treat.-Kira Greene
